How to calculate quilt border fabric

The quick answer, for a quilt top W“ × L“ and a border that finishes B“ wide, butted corners:
- Side borders: 2 strips, cut (B + 1/2“) × L
- Top/bottom borders: 2 strips, cut (B + 1/2“) × (W + 2B)
- The top and bottom strips are longer because they cross the side borders you just added.
For mitered corners, every strip needs the full finished dimension plus twice the border width plus a couple of inches to work the miter: (side length + 2B + 3“) is a safe cut.
Measure through the middle, not the edge
The single most important border habit: measure your quilt top through its vertical and horizontal center, not along the edges. Edges stretch during piecing and pressing; the middle doesn’t lie. Cut borders to the middle measurement and ease the edge to fit — this is what keeps borders flat instead of wavy.
If the two sides measure differently (they will, slightly), use the average.
Multiple borders compound
Each border grows the quilt for the next one. For an inner border finishing 1 1/2“ and an outer finishing 4“ on a 54“ × 66“ top:

Finished quilt: 65“ × 77“. Skipping the compounding step is the most common way border fabric comes up short.
Piecing border strips
Fabric is ~42“ wide, so most borders need strips joined end to end. Join them with a 45° diagonal seam rather than a straight one — the seam disperses across the border’s width and disappears, where a straight seam reads as a line. Diagonal joins cost a few extra inches per seam; add ~4“ per join when estimating.
Strips needed per border = total border length ÷ 40 (usable WOF), rounded up. Total yardage = strips × cut width, plus one extra strip’s worth of insurance if the fabric is directional.
Butted or mitered?
Butted (stitch sides, then top/bottom across them) is faster, uses less fabric, and is right for most quilts. Mitered (45° corner seams) earns its extra fabric when the border is a stripe, a print with direction, or multiple borders sewn as one unit — the corners turn like a picture frame.
