Quilt binding by the numbers: strips, corners, and joins

The quick answer: binding length = perimeter + ~10“ for corners and the final join. Strips needed = that total ÷ 40“ of usable width, rounded up. At the standard 2 1/2“ strip width:

The allowances people forget

  • Corners: each mitered corner folds away a bit more than the binding width. Four corners ≈ 10“–12“ of extra length when combined with…
  • The final join: closing the loop with a diagonal seam needs 8“–10“ of unattached tail on each side to work comfortably. The +10“ rule covers both for most quilts; go +12“ on a king.
  • Diagonal strip joins: each 45° join between strips eats about 2 1/2“ total. Ten strips = nine joins ≈ 22“ — which is already inside the “÷ 40 usable inches” figure, since strips are really ~42“. Don’t count it twice.

Straight grain or bias?

Straight grain (cross-grain WOF strips) is the default: fastest to cut, stretches just enough to handle, and right for any quilt with straight edges.

Bias binding (strips cut at 45°) earns its extra fabric twice: on curved edges, where it bends without puckering, and on hard-wearing quilts, because the fold lands across many threads instead of one — it genuinely outlasts straight-grain binding. Stripes cut on the bias also spiral around the edge, which is its own reward.

Continuous bias from one square

The elegant trick: one square of side S yields S² ÷ strip width running inches of continuous bias. Working backwards, the square you need is:

S = √(binding length × strip width)

For that lap quilt (244“ of 2 1/2“ binding): √(244 × 2.5) = √610 ≈ 25“ — a 25“ square, sewn into a tube with offset seams and cut in one spiral, binds the whole quilt. As a rule of thumb: 18“ square binds a baby quilt, 25“ a lap, 30“ a twin, 34“ a queen.

Width, briefly

2 1/2“ is the modern default (finishes ~3/8“ showing on each face with a comfortable fold). 2 1/4“ gives a tighter, flatter binding that many hand-finishers prefer. Below 2“, attaching gets fussy; above 2 3/4“, the binding starts to read as a tiny border. Whatever you pick, the strip count math is the same — only the yardage line changes.
