In the app, this also gives you

  • Backing yardage for the same quilt
  • Binding strips and yardage
  • A saved history of every calculation

How big should quilt batting be?

Batting needs to be larger than the quilt top so there is something to hold onto while you quilt. Four inches of overhang per side is the common rule for home machines; longarm quilters usually ask for four to six. If you buy batting off a roll, the calculator also tells you how long a cut you need — it checks both orientations and uses the one that fits.

Buying packaged batting instead? The batting sizes chartlists every standard package with the largest quilt top it genuinely covers — which is not always the one with the matching name. For the quilt sizes themselves, see the quilt size chart.

There's more where that came from

The app remembers your batting overhang, adds the backing and binding for the same quilt, and hands you one shopping list.
