How much fabric do I need for a quilt backing?

A backing has to be larger than the quilt top so there is room to quilt it. The common rule is to add 4 inches on each side (a longarm quilter often wants more). If the backing is wider than a single width of fabric, you seam two or more widths together. Sashing works out how many widths you need and reports the total yardage, choosing whichever seam direction wastes less.

There's more where that came from

The app remembers your overhang and fabric width, adds the batting and binding for the same quilt, and keeps every calculation in a history.
