How much fabric do I need for a quilt backing?
A backing has to be larger than the quilt top so there is room to quilt it. The common rule is to add 4 inches on each side (a longarm quilter often wants more). If the backing is wider than a single width of fabric, you seam two or more widths together. Sashing works out how many widths you need and reports the total yardage, choosing whichever seam direction wastes less.
