How many pieces come from a width of fabric?
Divide the usable width (fabric width minus selvages) by the cut width and round down — that is your pieces per strip. Each strip costs one cut-height of length, so the yield from any yardage is the number of whole strips times the pieces per strip. Round down at every step: a partial piece is scrap, not a piece.
